ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ School of Osteopathic Medicine reaches next milestone
San Antonio - The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ has reached an important step in the development of the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ School of Osteopathic Medicine (ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½SOM). ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½SOM received pre-accreditation with permission to recruit immediately and provisional accreditation status effective July 1, 2016 from the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).
“This is a crucial step in ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½’s goal of addressing the healthcare needs of San Antonio and South Texas. We still have much work ahead but we are pleased that we have received the green light to move forward,” said ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½SOM Founding Dean Dr. Robyn Madson.
This phase of accreditation is granted when a school demonstrates the ability to initiate instruction by a specified date. With regard to the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½SOM, that date is July 31, 2017. A school demonstrating consistency in meeting standards for each class of instruction being offered will continue to receive provisional accreditation.
Provisional accreditation status is reviewed annually to assess the academic progress of the first, second and third year classes through graduation.
The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½SOM Office of Admissions will begin accepting student applications June 1, 2016 with plans for students to begin classes in Fall 2017. The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½SOM anticipates an inaugural class of 150 students. For application information, contact the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½SOM admissions office at DOdoc@uiwtx.edu or refer to the school website – www.uiw.edu/som
